In the second half of the 19th century, the poor young man Šanko fell in love with the pretty girl Bonka, a rich family's daughter. Their mutual love, passionate and youthful, was accompanied with numerous obstacles. They had loved one another for a year and a half, when Šanko had to join the Serbian-Turkish war. When he returned to the village two years later, he was told that Bonka's parents had arranged for her to be married to a rich elderly merchant from Negotin. Bonka demanded that the prime violin player Šanko played at her wedding. And so was it done. She took an opportunity and invited him to her chambers to say farewell. It was in this room that a crime took place. There are numerous versions of the event. According to some, Bonka demanded Šanko to kill her, or that she even guided his hand with a knife.
