Jury decision XXVI International Festival of Ethnological Film

Taking into consideration the specific features of ethnographic and cinematographic records, the Jury of the 26th International Festival of Ethnological Film,

Etami Borjan, PhD, Milutin Dedić, PhD, and Aleksandra Pavićević, PhD,

have unanimously reached the following



Dragoslav Antonijević Gran Prix, is awarded to the film

In search of the shaman, directed by Pierre Boccanfuso. France


Since 1994, the director has been tracking the life of the Palawan community in the Philippines, recording everyday life and encounters with the products of modern civilization. The life of the community was shaped by the practice of a local shaman. After his death, the community experiences a crisis; while unsuccessfully searching for a new shaman, it opens the door to external influences. As a complex and powerful story about the life of this community, coupled with a multi-faceted visual presentation, excellent cinematography and an elaborate methodology of ethnographic research, this film stands out as an example of contemporary research and activist ethnographic film.


The award for the best national film goes to the film:

Promise, directed by Željko Mirković and Dušan Gajić. Serbia, Belgium

The story from the village of Rogljevo (Negotinska Krajina) presented by the authors, reflects the complexity of the cultural, historical and social situation and an attempt to rise above it through a dream of making superb wine. This is possible if a harmony among stone, climate and heritage is established. The film draws attention to communication challenges in an encounter between different cultures and raises the question of the possibility of adopting new ideas and knowledge. At the same time, it highlights the challenges of ethnographic research and their audiovisual shaping and underscores the necessity of preserving intangible heritage.


The award for the best international film goes to the film

Grab and Run, directed by Roser Corella. Spain, Germany.

The film revisits established and generally accepted traditional customs in Kyrgyzstan that persist at the expense of women's rights and freedoms. The applied methodology implies an intimist approach, which allows the audience to grasp the problem of abduction from a woman's angle. The film is marked by the skilful use of the camera, which appears as an almost imperceptible mediator in the communication between the director and the interviewed persons shown in the film.


The award for the contribution to intangible cultural heritage goes to the film:

Šanko fell in love with Bonka, directed by Vanja Čolić. Serbia.

The film contributes to the preservation of the Serbian intangible cultural heritage by highlighting the specific linguistic, musical, social, literary and historical value of the poem about Šanko and Bonka from Zaječar.


The award for the best ethnographic record goes to the film:

Weaving Stories, directed by Ciara Calvet. Spain.

The film is a multi-faceted depiction of Bolivian culture, where weaving is a "total social fact" that leaves its imprint on everyday and ritual life of the community. The film is also an example of a classic ethnographic film that combines field research with scholarly anthropological interpretations.


The award for cinematography goes to the film:

The Last Dance, directed by Diego D’Innocenzo. Italy.

This film of a distinct visual quality stands out for its elaborate cinematographic language and skilful camera movements in demanding scenes of mass religious rituals in India, as well as for a meticulous depiction of traditional dance.



The award for editing goes to the film:

Small people. Big trees, directed by Vadim Vitovtsev. Russian.

Finely edited sequences contribute to the strong narrative structure and dynamic rhythm, emphasizing the symbolism of the cinematographic narrative about the Baka tribe in the Central African Republic.



A special award for creative curiosity goes to the film:

Wavrin, from the manor to the jungle, directed by Grace Winter and i Luc Plantier. Belgium.

The film pays homage to one of the pioneers of ethnographic film, Marquis de Wavrin, who unveiled to the world the unknown areas of South America, guided by the power of his curiosity. In doing so, he did not slip into colonization research practices of the time, but he rather praised the peculiarities of different, non-Western cultures.
