The documentary film “Paper, Horse and Birds” follows a day of Romani family, collectors of recyclable materials, living in the Red Star settlement in Niš. By following their activities – collecting and sorting scrap iron and paper, family lunch and everyday conversations, we compose an image of their way of life and the hardships they face. Even in the objectively difficult financial situation, we reach an image of a well-adjusted family ruled by solidarity and warm interpersonal relationships.

The film functions at three dramaturgical levels. At the first level, this is a documentary film of a day of a family. At the second level, through the interviews with the family members, this is a story on the position of Roma, work and exploitation of underage childred. At the third level, through the thoughts of the main character Đulijan, it is playing with the stereotypes on Roma, the Romani culture and the “fate”, therefore the existing stereotypes on the Romani community.
