Тhe film presents an exceptional orator and one of the best self-taught frula flute player among the elders, and an authentic performer and guardian of the indigenous sound on the frula in Raški Ibar. This film, following the path of the ethnomusicological past between Studenica and Raška, plucks from oblivion many tunes for kolo dances perfected for the frula instrument. Self-taught Marko Pendić speaks of them excitedly and performs them on his long frula flute, bringing the tunes directly from the soul. In the best manner of an improvising film protagonist, this excellent keeper of tradition with an exceptional sense of sounds and rhythm explains, plays, and impressively presents all the kolo tunes that constitute a kind of musicological treasure and a very significant and unexplored intangible cultural heritage of this area. For the scholars, The Sounds of the Frula Under Mt. Golija – Marko Pendić may be a film clue that will serve as a first step for further study and for future generations.
Mile Jasnić is a versatile author, journalist and videographer, screenwriter and director, researcher of cultural heritage and author of several documentary and ethnological films. He earned a number of awards and recognitions for preserving the tradition and culture of the Serbian countryside.
