The social institution of selling children persisted in the area of Ogulin and Kordun in Croatia until the 1960s. On the feast of St George (April 23), the gathering places established by tradition turned into a cultural space where oral contracts were concluded between poor parents and lords who need servants. The time distance enables us to analyze the former practice within various discourses.
