The film is based on the folk tale Baš Čelik. The young shepherd Nebojša unwittingly saves the tyrant Baš Čelik, who abducts his fiance Vida on their wedding day and enslaves the entire country. Baš Čelik and his men cannot be killed by conventional weapons, but only with a magical sword which can be found in a distant empire. Nebojša conqueres the sword, returns, and defeats Baš Čelik and his army, thus rescuing her Vida as well.
