In the village of Donje Lanište near Jagodina, the locals have always grown reed, which is suitable for making reed mats. Once almost the entire village has worked in this old craft. Today only twelve reed mat craftsmen are left. The work itself is quite complex and requires tending to throughout the year. The village of Donje Lanište, as well as its surroundings, are rich in high-quality reed that grows wild in marsh areas. During the summer months the reed stems are cut, dried, huskedand separated into quality sets.Long, ribbon-like parts of reedstemare woven on vertical wooden looms into asura platesand later made into various useful items. The products are sold at fairs throughout Serbia. They are perfectly adapted to the needs of modern population.
