In the town of Murter (at Murter island in the Šibenik archipelago), the expression “bake” (“grannies”) is not reflecting any generational relationships but is instead a dialect term for masked persons who participate in collective activities at the final three days of the carnival (on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday), including the trial of KrnjoKrnjić and the parade of masked groups and allegory floats. Regarding the parade, the denizens of Murter remember that it already existed in the 1950s and probably even earlier, and the effort invested in preparation of these group masks and floats is fascinating.

 

Ivo Kuzmanić was born in Zagreb in 1966. He has been working in the production department of HRT since late 1990s and early 2000s. As a director and (co)writer, he made numerous documentary films in the field of both traditional and popular culture, and many of them won awards.
