Set in 1835 Wallachia (now part of Romania), Aferim! follows Costandin, a local constable, and his son Ionita as they journey through the countryside hunting for Carfin, a runaway Roma slave. Hired by a nobleman whose slave allegedly had an affair with his wife, the pair encounter a variety of people –peasants, monks, bandits, and deeply prejudiced clergy – revealing the social, ethnic, and moral tensions of their time.
Radu Jude is a Romanian film director and screenwriter. He graduated from the Media University of Bucharest in 2003. He directed many acclaimed short films – notably The Tube with a Hat (2006), one of the most awarded Romanian shorts. His feature debut, The Happiest Girl in the World (2009), won international festival prizes. He gained major recognition for Aferim! (2015), winning the “Silver Bear” for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival.
