The film takes us to the refugee camps set in the depths of the Algerian desert, where the Saharawi people have been dwelling in miserable conditions for over 40 years. In 1975, the Spanish colonizers left Western Sahara – the homeland of Saharawis, however the territory was invaded soon after. Until today Western Sahara remains a disputed territory. Camps in Algerian desert, where more than 170.000 Saharawis found refuge, turned into settlements. Two Slovenian photographers visit the camps. People of different generations and social backgrounds have their portraits taken. They speak of struggles against the colonial rule, fighting against the invading forces, war crimes, setting up the camps, their eternal exile and of situation they face today.
Erik Valenčič is a filmmaker with in-depth knowledge of the Middle East and Africa. In his latest documentary films he was dealing with the situation in Kurdistan, Iraq and Western Sahara.
